Burger 1: McDonald's Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese

As the journey begins, I thought I'd start with all fast food venues in the vicinity of my home and then branch out and move on to local restaurants and eateries.

The first stop, and the first checkmark on the list is McDonald's.  McDonald's, arguably the most popular fast food chain restaurant, has been around since 1940 when the first restaurant opened in San Bernardino, California.  Today, 75 years later, there are over 35,000 locations across 119 countries that serve 68 million people every day!

This burger was just one of the millions consumed by humans on this day.  And why? Let's take a closer look at how the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese pans out on the BBSR rubric.

The Beef: The beef, which "slow cooks" in those plastic microwave drawers, has probably been sitting there for at least a few hours before I even thought about leaving my couch and buying the burger.  The beef had a strange grayish tint to it, which I will admit, took several Instagram filters to make look like an appetizing color.  Isn't this expected from a McDonald's burger though? The level of unhealthiness which makes Americans crave it even more? On the BBSR, however, the beef received 1 out of a possible 4 points.

The Bun: The bun, which looks to be toasted on the inside, but tastes like it was never toasted upon biting into it.  It was an illusion that the brown, crusted, toasted look tasted like an untouched piece of white bread.  A soft and soggy bun receives 1 out of a possible 4 points.

Beef to Bun Ratio: Every burger should always succeed in this category, regardless of number of patties placed between the buns.  If it is my decision to eat a single hamburger, the size of that hamburger should have a beef to bun ratio which is comparable to a multiple patty burger.  The beef will very seldom outweigh the bun, so instead, in this category I am looking for there to be enough beef to compensate for the size of the restaurant's bun.  In McDonald's case the beef to bun ratio for the double quarter pounder was great.  However, still room for a little more beef.  3 out of a possible 4 points were received in this category.

Presentation: Keep in mind I arranged this burger for the picture.  If I were to show you the reverse angle of this same burger, you'd see two plain patties and no toppings.  I guess the McDonald's worker only wanted to put toppings on half of my burger.  For this, the 35,000+ restaurants receive 2 out of a possible 4 points for presentation.

Cheese: The melted, gooey, plastic, they call cheese at McDonald's was a decent portion but after paying with my credit card, it tasted like they melted it on top and dyed it yellow.  1 out of 3 points.

Sear: As mama always told Forrest, "You can't sear a burger in a microwave." 1 out of 3 points.

Overall taste: Overall, the burger was okay.  There were no bites where I regretted buying the burger, yet there were no bites where I wished the burger would never end.  2 out of 5 points.

BBSR: 11 / 27
